General Discussion / Re: Newbie question

Dry firing is only really bad on rimfire firearms due to how the firing pin can peen the edge of the chamber. I've never really heard of any adverse effect of dry firing on a centerfire. If you're worried buy some snap caps. I dry fire my rifle probably twice as much as I fire live ammo down it.

I am from the Terre Haute area and hoping to learn better long distance reloading. I just put a Savage 12 LRP 6.5 creedmore in layaway while i was buying a eotech 512 for my AR. I have been reloading for about 6+ years and still consider myself a novice. I have been using poor to marginal equipment (lee 4 hole turret) the entire time i have been loading and is fine for hunting and plinking but not going to reach 1k yards consistent. Have the new Lyman brass smith all american turret on backorder. Now i need to figure out the rest of the good equipment i need for precision such as neck turner, concentricity gauges, ect... Not looking to break the bank but i do expect to spend over 700 for what i need. But the information and how tos is priceless and probably what i need most.

Anyway long story... Thank you all in advance I am sure you will be extremely helpful in my journey to 1k.

Getting Started / Rifle/Caliber suggestions
« Last post by DVC on May 21, 2018, 01:57:42 PM »
Iím interested in getting started in PRS, and I'm interested in recommendations for my choice of caliber and rifle.

Caliber:
Iím contemplating one of the Creedmoor calibers Ė either 6mm or 6.5mm.  I reload for pistol, but havenít gotten set up to reload for rifle (yet?), so I was leaning toward staying with a caliber that would allow me to run factory loads.  As I live in the Northeast, I understand 6mm may be a better choice, as it has less recoil, and the typical target range would not be as far as out West, where the heavier bullet would provide an advantage.  So my question is, would the lesser recoil (and I assume, easier spotting of bullet impact) of the 6mm make it preferred for East coast matches, or is 6.5 still a safer bet?

Rifle:
I like the Tikka T3X Tac A1, but itís not available in 6mm CM (if thatís the preferred caliber).  I also like the Ruger RPR and the Bergara LPR, both of which are available in both 6 and 6.5CM.  With a plan for minimal (if any) customization to the rifle, which would be your choice?

Thanks

Introduce Yourself / NE WI New
« Last post by Cbebop on May 20, 2018, 09:44:56 AM »
Hi from NE WI. Been shooting since I can remember. Formal training courtesy of Uncle Sam and the taxpayers. Retired after 20 yrs following shooting expeditions in some of the world's most beautiful locations (sarc). Wasn't smart enough to stay home so three more trips as a PMC. Now I shoot at stuff that doesn't shoot back...less stressful.

Gonna attend Steel Challenge at Highlands in Cascade WI on Jun 02 2018 and BWRS in Lodi WI. Maybe I'll meet some of the WI group. Got a USN (frogman) friend that might ride along as long as he leaves the nautical jargon at home. Hope to meet some other shooters here and learn some things about PRS. Thanks.

Hi all,

Just clarifying your recommendation to "dry fire" the rifle....my understanding is dry firing a gun is not good for the firing pin or has that changed over the years?....By the way....I am also new to long range shooting (can't wait to get started).  I have my setup almost complete (as far as add-ons go...i.e. scope/qd mount (on the way); LRA send iT level; NightForce angle indicator; S&B PM II 5-25X56 MRad CCW 4PLF FFP and just waiting for my SilencerCo Hybrid Suppressor to finish the setup.

Hello from Virginia.  Haven't started shooting yet as I am still working on completing my Ruger Precision Rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor.  Question I have for anyone with a suggestion:  I have the S&B 5-25 Police Mark II, and have ordered the Mid West 34mm QD Mount with 1.4" offset.  Just trying to confirm that this mount will handle the scope/gun for long distance shooting.  Thanks for any input.

You might want to do the dry firing in the living room.  The wife might get pissed if you set to dry firing your rifle 100 times in the "loving" room.  Just my thought on the matter  ;D
