Title: Need advise on first precision rifle purchase
Post by: kmaultsby on August 03, 2018, 01:40:07 AM
Looking to purchase my first precision rifle and optics. My budget is around 3K.  I looking at the Ruger Precision Rifle in 6mm a Bergara or Savage 110 tactical, 10 GRS  or other.  I reload no that not is an issue. My other sport is I shoot IDPA and USPSA.  I would appreciate any suggestions.

What is the purpose for the rifle? To compete? What discipline? For fun?

These answers will help us make better recommendations.

I bought a Remington 700 ADL Tactical in 6.5 Creedmoor for $503.xx at Dick's, topped it with a Vortex Golden Eagle ($1300), added a Harris 6-9" bipod(stolen from another rifle), Timney Calvin Elite trigger($150 on sale), and an SPT HuDu brake($165). Only thing I did was put the barreled action in a barrel vise and tighten the atrocious headspace Remington sends their rifles out with and lap the barrel. I've shot 150gr Sierra Matchkings at 2925fps and have yet to look back. All in, I've got more I'm the scope than the rifle. You don't need to spend massive bucks on a rifle to compete with guys spending double, or more, what you did.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180812/388874daf4528b288ffbfcd9217ff0e3.jpg)

Really?  Who is it you're trying to compete against using a rifle with no magazine and a second focal plane scope, exactly? This is some of the worse advice I've seen recently...

Yeah man, with a $3k budget, I think you are on the right track. If you are talking about PRS, You are going go need something capable of 5 shot groups at least under 1 MOA. The closer you are to “bench rest” accuracy the better. If you reload (you need too) all the better.

Vortex scopes seem to be a good bang for the buck. A lot of top competitors use them. I prefer Night Force. US Optics, Leupold, Bender, etc. all excellent.

Can’t go wrong with any of the 6mm chambering. Loving my 6mm Creedmoor. A lot of guys still winning with the 6.5’s too.

I do it for fun but, hard not to get addicted. A bipod, a good barricade bag, and you are ready to go!

Best of luck..
