I'm making preparations for the upcoming Steel Classic and I'm trying to figure out how many mags I should have. I've got one AW for my rifle, and I imagine I'll need at least one more.
Is two enough? How many is a good number? Should I try to just get by
I appreciate the input guys.

Two is one, one is none.

The answer is at least 3.

3 minimum. At a local match,  sometimes we'll have a stage where you have 30 seconds to hit a plate as many times as you can. You may not get to the third mag, but it's nice to have in case something goes bad.

Or in case you lose one, like I did at that Grind.  :(

I assume you mean three 10 round mags (not 5 round) correct? Thanks.

Absolutely.  If you're using 5 rounds mags, you'll want at least 5, maybe 6.

While you won't frequently have to fire more than 20 rounds per stage, it does happen occasionally.

Right now I have (3) 10 round mags and (1) 5 round mag in my bag.  I have a few extras I leave in the vehicle.

I got a few of the MagPul mags (5 round) when they came out and I'm liking those.  When the 10 round MagPul mags come out I'm going to try those too.

All of that to say that I may carry as many as 10 of those if they work well.

I'd like that little bit of extra time to concentrate on the stage.  Not that it's a big deal, either way.

Really, I just like loading mags more at home than I do at the match.

Question for the PRO's:

First time on forum and beginner in the PRS.

What is a good kydex or soft nylon pouch for the 10 round magazine to use for matches?

Thanks guys, learning a lot on the forum.

You may want to specify *which* 10 round magazine..  I'm guessing you mean AICS, but there are many others, and they aren't all the same size.

This is of particular importance when talking about kydex.

I'm interested in this as well but I'm using .300 Win Mag AICS magazines (and holy cow are these mags expensive!).
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I'm really liking HSGI Taco pouches. They'll hold my AI mags, PMAGS, AR  or AK mags.

I had Grand River Tactical make some 300WM mag pouches for me.  They have a velcro flap, along with a bungie/cord lock system that tightens around the body of the mag.  Not the fastest for drawing a magazine, but for field conditions, it helps keep the dirt out of the mags, and lessens the likelyhood of a mag falling out when on the move.

I normally have 6 mags with me, depending on the match, but many times only use 3 of them.

As for pouches, I have a mix, I have 2 of the Triad Tactical pouches that hold 2 mags each and then I have 2 of the Tab Gear pouches that are singles, how/when I used them is completely match dependent. There's actually a match that I've shot the last 2 years in a row that I run the 2 tab pouches on my belt and the 2 triad pouches on a drop leg platform, and all 6 mags loaded full. this is because in that match you're on the clock from start to finish across a course that's up to 1.25 miles long and has had as many as 5 stages on that course and every minute saved is points. But that's kind of a unique match too.

If you want kydex, check with 3gunstuff.com they have a nice Kydex AIC pouch. I'd use those but I run all alpha mags so they don't work as well with them.
